Abbots Bromley v Sunseekers, 10th September 2006
One of those days to forget, although Jim Taylor will probably find it difficult to do that.
A glorious late summer's day, with the sun beating down and everyone in good spirits - until the captain arrived back from the toss-up to inform us we were fielding first.
After a couple of early breakthroughs from Fred (ct Bennett behind the stumps) and Ross, the joys of Sunday afternoon cricket were soon beaten out of us by a couple of Abbots Bromley's league batsmen who both plundered centuries, before retiring through boredom.
To add insult to misery a late quickfire 50 from another first-teamer saw Sunseekers sloping off the field having been set a target of over 300 and only Dave Evans, with 36 from his eight overs, the only bowler to survive the slaughter.
Jim, who bravely came on to bowl the last couple of overs from Pavilion End while the ball was being lost in all parts of the ground, saw three dropped catches and a missed stumping all in his final over as the demoralisation took its toll. He'd also earlier seen the ball thump against his car.
Jim's day wasn't over as, sent out to open the batting, he lost sight of a beamer and took a crack on the head and had to leave the field for treatment.
The rest of the game passed by with a succession of Sunseekers batsmen making it into double figures before perishing.
Just to hurry things along, Abbots Bromley brought on their First Team opening bowler at the end where the setting sun was at eye level He ripped through the rest of the innings, grabbing a hat-trick along the way with an lbw decision off a ball that Mogie edged onto his pads.
Not a great afternoon, then, although the Abbots Bromley captain did earnestly apologise for the one-sided nature of the game.
