Sutton 231-4 (Ashford 16-6-69-2, Nicholls 5-1-38-2)
Sunseekers 136 for something
Match yawn, oops, sorry, drawn.
Sunseekers greased up and wandered out into the blazing sun at Sutton for a rare (this year at any rate) hot session in the field. Fred bowled a massive 16 over spell and it was only in the last few overs that his figures were dented, he bowled much better than they suggest. The fielding was generally good, but there were a few mistakes that opened the door for the Sutton batsmen to build a big total. A possible champagne moment was the LFC's belly flop in the field, spectacularly missing a ball which subsequently trickled the last 20 yards to the boundary before he was able to get up. Perhaps a more athletic fielder (Brian for example) would have recovered, saved the four and run out the batsman. The thing that makes it a possible champagne moment was the 10 overs of excuses that followed, generally based on the (non-existent) drainage ditch that caused the error! The skipper is very unforgiving - later in the innings, yours truly made a stop, at ankle height, from the batsman in form. The ball rocketed off the meat of the bat an I managed to get a hand to it, badly bruising my thumb. The ball escaped and ran a few yards, encouraging the batsmen to take a single. Wenny, forgetting completely his (non-injuring) error earlier in the day then berated yours truly for not having the wherewithall to recover and run out the batsman. Cruel barsteward!! Sutton opened their shoulders and in the last 30 minutes of their innings added 80 runs.
Tea was great as always, and so stuffed with sandwiches and cake, Sunseekers finest headed out to bat. This did not go quite as well as we would have hoped thanks to some accurate bowling from Sutton. With 14 overs to go and the score on 107, LFC joined BB at the crease and promptly shut up shop when the slow bowlers came on. This created another possible champagne moment when Stuart Greasley asked for a change in umpire because he was nodding off with boredom and was struggling to keep count of the balls in each over. Like the game, this report just peters out ...
