Waterhouses 60-9 (Bull 4-13 off 8; Bennett 3-9 off 6), Sunseekers 64-0 (Carpenter 54 no). Won by 10 wkts.

" ... our bowlers soon settled into their rhythm, Fred taking an early wicket with his speciality ball ..."

The clouds cleared and the sun came out as we assembled at West Park. After recovering from the walk over to the pitch, the old stagers looked on as new boy John Carpenter was observed testing out his new bat. As usual, Crawford's keen cricketing brain misses nowt. The conversation went something like ...

Colston - "He's opening"

Nige - "Who with"

Colston - "anyone, it doesn't matter"

How true these words were. Chasing a total of 60-9 on a damp early season wicket could have led to the usual close defeat but John had different ideas. He smashed several 4s and 6s in a whirlwhind knock of 54 no. Protecting his new no. 2, the Skipper smashed several dot balls to weigh in with a mighty match winning 7 not out.

Prior to this, our bowlers soon settled into their rhythm, Fred taking an early wicket with his speciality ball, the top-spin inswinging legcutting flipper (see end of article * for full description) which bowled their opener. Possibly the highlight of the innings was Brian bowling to Derek, almost 140 years between them and well over 100 years of cricketing experience went into each delivery. The younger man had a lot of admiration for Derek - "batted very sensibly I thought, Super". The fielding was sharp, well as sharp as it ever gets, new boy John can run and throw as well as bat. Wow, things just get better and better!

There was only one pitch invasion when a member of the public (looked like a pale version of Howard from the Halifax) came rushing on to hug the unfortunate Nige Palmer when he took the club's second catch of the season (who took the first - I am too modest to say).

A couple of shots of the day's hot action.
