Custom House, 5/7/03
Posted Saturday, April 9, 2005
The day started well - despite the early start even Woodward turned up on time, beaten only by a matter of seconds by the Custom House minibus. Stewart 'Slimboy' Walters arrived late giving the excuse of mental preparation for the match. He would not say who his life-coach was but the Skipper was observed on the phone for a lengthy period of time prior to the arrival of Slimboy ... nuff sed. The Skipper accepted his note and did not give him any lines to do.
Brian 'Moneyback' Bennett was sent to negotiate with the parkie since the wicket had not been done. The room was duly opened and our free game started. This was somewhat of a relief as it cut short the Skipper's nostalgic tales of his childhood in the Park ... nuff sed.
Evans (W) and Ashford opened the bowling. They bowled very tidily and soon had Custom House two down. The batsmen then slowly clawed their way back, lifting the Custom House score into the thirties before Dave Evans and Slimboy Walters put paid to that with 3 wickets between them. Slimboy was continually involved, displaying great speed in the field aiding the neoprene-powered Skipper in chases and abetting Evans by taking a well-judged catch off his bowling.
The highlight of the first half of the Custom House innings was a few delightful overs in which the ball seemed to follow Dave Evans (well not so much follow as go quite close and then disappear past causing him to run lots). Needless to say the Grey One received very little sympathy.
The highlight of the second half of the innings was the Parkie dismissing one of the local Juvenile Delinquents (who apparently had just beaten up a kid half his age). After the break, Sunseekers went out to bat ... nuff sed but the beer in the Smithfield afterwards was good.

Karen, Fred seems to have a strange lump on the side of his head.

Dave, why is Nige doing his Wilson, Kepple and Betty* impression here and now? Dunno mate.

The red thing heads towards a relaxed Bennett ...

... oops!

You really ought to try shagging worms Jim, I'm having a great time here.

The youthful Palmer and Slimboy relax prior to their innings.

Duffill in action.

Duffill in action again as the skipper calls for a choice of helmets.

* for the youngsters (under 60's), this was a music hall act in which the aforementioned persons did the 'Sand Dance', a pseudo-Egyptian shuffle (a bit like the shuffle in a certain large fast bowlers run up).
